Kz900 seat stand

The kz900 that acquired recently hasn't got a seat stand and the seat folds right open and seems to rest on the side panel. Obviously not ideal, yet I can't see anything on either the underside seat or the frame under the seat where a seat stand might be missing. There must be a seat stand of sorts surely ?

Hmmm, I must be missing something.
I have the hinges with those little tangs on them, but I dont see what they do. In the pictures in the other thread the seat is open and those tangs are doing nothing ! Can you explain how it's supposed to support the seat please ?

The tangs are supposed to hit the fixed part of the hinge on the frame stoppping it hitting the side panel etc.
However it worked so well they didn't carry it forward......

I never did get to the bottom of this, and my seat still sits on the side panel when it’s fully open, which I don’t like.
Could someone do me a favour and post up a close up picture of the hinge and how it should prevent the seat from touching the side panel please. Maybe I’m dim but I still don’t see how it’s meant to work. Or maybe my hinges aren’t right.

I had the same problem in the end I put a big cable tie on it to stop the seat hitting the side panel the brackets for the little stay rod is not on my bike a,Z1000A1 I will be interested to see how it should be.

Actually I think the tangs are supposed to stop the L shaped hinge pins from being removed when the seat is locked.

I solved my issue by moving the rear seat hinge to the front and the front hinge to the rear. This stops the seat hitting the panel.

Mine looks the same as all of those, but I just don’t see how the seat isn’t going to just go back and rest on the side panel without a stay or something else to stop it. Interested in your comment Taffus about how switching the hinges around stopped it hitting. I can’t see how that would stop it but I may wander out to the garage in a bit and give it a whiz.

I would think that one or maybe both of the brackets on the frame have been bent down a bit, the rubber blocks should stop that but if they have worn or have ever been missing the brackets will bend, they could also bend if the seat was in the open position and took a knock, on my bike the clearance from the edge of the seat to the top of the side panel is about 5mm at it's tightest which is towards the rear but the seat clears comfortably whilst opening and when fully open.

I see what you are saying Steve, and with a Lardy arse like mine if the rubbers are worn then the weight would be partially taken by the hinges. Even so, putting to one side that the seat might miss the side panel if the brackets aren’t bent back, what is the seat resting on when it’s fully open ? Is it the edge of the seat against the frame ?

One of seat hinges has about 3mm of metal protruding from it which hits the underside of the bracket on the frame stopping it from opening too far, you can just about see it on the rear hinge of the Brown (great colour) bike picture and on the front hinge on Taffus's pictures, not the best set up which is probably why Kawasaki added the stay to the Z1000.

Nope, I’m none the wiser. I can see nothing about my hinges that would prevent the seat from hinging right back.
Maybe I don’t have the right hinges ?
