KZ1000 A1 Engine & Frame Numbers - Can These Be Correct

#1 PostAuthor: pertonpc » Mon Oct 24, 2016 5:25 pm

Can I have some technical advice please Guys -

According to Z Power website a Z1000 A1 should have
frame no. KZT00A-027500 or less
engine no. KZT00A - 042500 or less

An actual bike (which looks like an A1) is showing these numbers

frame no. KZT00A- 5039** seems way too high

engine no. KZT00A- 0128** seems ok in the range

if the 5 was a zero it would be 003900 ish which would be in the range but seems way low compared to the engine.

Did I hear something about Lincoln Nebraska bikes getting a 5 in the number somewhere to denote USA built ??

Could these numbers have ever been supplied together from the factory on a Z1000 A1 machine ??

Please give me some pointers here people

Cheers from Mark

Are you sure the A is not a B Mark?.... that would make it a 77 LTD on those numbers.

Thanks Guys,

Not at all sure on anything yet Garry,

Not seen it in the flesh - only photos.

Are there any tell tale signs for a B LTD frame I could look out for ??

. . . so could numbers that far apart have been assembled like it at the factory :?: :?:

Aren't the back end of the frames different on LTD's? Thought that was why LTD's are much cheaper because there is a lot of work to convert to make desirable. Or is that just 650's?

Warren
I think the LTD thou still had a duck tail - unlike the 650 versions.
I had an LTD 1000 seat fitted to a Z1 frame ok

I agree rear wheel was smaller size so I don't know where the difference if any lies.

Someone will be along soon to enlighten us I'm sure.

Exhaust hangers on the LTD are very different to the A1.

I was always led to believe the engine & Frame numbers stopped being 'close' after the Z1b as the engines were then used in different models, ie A4/5 and Ltd etc.

Hi Garry,

A lad off another forum has just posted some A1 frame and engine numbers from December 1976 builds at the Nebraska factory - and they seem broadly in line with these
e.g. frame 503941 belongs to engine 012949

which is pretty close to what I am being quoted on this bike so it looks like it could well be legit.

if anyone has a piccy of a genuine A1 exhaust hanger frame bracket and an LTD Thou one to compare I would be grateful for either.

Cheers

Exhaust bracket on the A1 is one piece solid. Ltd is two tubes like the Z1 set up.

Great thanks lads.

The one I am looking at is a dead ringer for Garry's type of rear footrest hanger - not the tube type in Gus's picture so I think we are safe to rule out an LTD frame.

Cheers

1000LTD B1/B2 77/78 had a Z1000A1/A2 engine and Z1000/900A4 tailpiece.

1000LTD B3/B4 79/80 had a Z1000A3/A4 (MK2, square cam cover) Engine and Z900 Tailpiece.

1000LTD K 1981 onwards had Z1000J rubber mounted engine, distinctly different look with no tailpiece.

LTD B1-B4 had exhaust and footrest hangers similar to, if not identical to the 900A4,ie tubular not pressed steel.

Z1000A1-A2 side panels and tail piece are listed also for the Z1000 LTD B1-B4.

LTD has 16" rear wheel.

LTD has an odd shaped tank.

LTD has a strange headlamp bracket that bolts to the yokes and a horrid stepped seat, which needs a taller grab rail.

That, folks seems to be about it, unless anyone knows any different.

Looking for more info all the time.....
Cheers,

Mark.

Some of the problem is that there are a lot of Ltd's about being passed off as Z1/A4's as it doesn't take a lot to make the former look like the latter.

However making a Ltd look like an A1 would be a bit more involved. So would it have been worth the effort doing in the first place?. Always worth checking though.
