You're asking for trouble taking the key out, the lock can sieze and make it impossible to re-insert key.
Cheers,

And NEVER use WD40 on locks.

You flash bastard Mikey - taking the key out!! The ones that live in the workshop are in constant state of readiness in case we have non-salty roads and sunshine

The bikes that live in the lockup are subject to damp so I always intend to coat them in ACF50. Trouble is that they are out of sight, out of mind. Must get down there and do them! I would recommend covering all the bike in ACF50 save the brake discs, seat and handlebar rubbers. I tend not to do the paint sets, though it wont harm them. ACF50 is especially good for electrics and aluminium!

But then Wokingham is so upmarket and expensive that you have your own warmer climate.

Some top tips I've found useful keeping my zed in the shed over winter.

WD40 down the 4x4s and then surgical gloves over the end of each one.

I find that draining the carbs down has a downside. The O rings on the fuel union tees shrink and leak like a bastard when you put new fuel in for the new season. They can take a couple of days to swell up again and stop leaking. So this year I'm going to try keeping the tank topped up and just run fuel through the carbs about once a month.

ACF50 is not good on air cooled engines I've found. It turns into a brownish varnish when the engine gets hot. I've no doubts at all it's doing it's job though. I had to use brake cleaner to get it off. I use WD40 on the motor instead. That steams up on a hot engine and makes you feel really good.

"ACF50 is not good on air cooled engines I've found. It turns into a brownish varnish when the engine gets hot."

good point - I found the same thing. Nearly shat myself first time I saw it - thought something was well and truly gunged-up somewhere and was now finding its own way out! The WD40 down the 4x4s seems like a good idea - cheaper than ACF50 too - and at the price for a replacement set, those pipes need all the preservation I/we can give them!

I sometimes think that maybe I overdo it with the preventative stuff, but then I'd rather do this than find out the hard way if maybe it would have been better to have done it in the first place.

... and it gives me an excuse to get down to the workshop! (again  )
