Electric start on a Z1R

#1 PostAuthor: dave m » Sat Feb 23, 2008 9:42 pm

Hi Everyone,

I,m looking for a bit of guidance on a problem with my 1978 Z1R. The electric starter has never worked as up till now I have always used the kickstarter. I going to have a look at getting it repaired next weekend, can anyone point me in the right direction with some basic checks before I get a bike mechanic to look at it.

I,m an electrician by trade and I wondered if I could fix it myself as it could be a wiring problem?

regards

Dave

Hello Dave, does the solonoid click when you press the button ? if not then it could be the starter solonoid or a problem with in the switch gear or wiring between swithgear and the solonoid, if the solonoid does click then its getting power and would look likely to be with the main feed to the starter motor or the starter motor itself, Regards, Steve

G'Day,

Short the starter solenoid terminals and if the motor runs then that's a good start (no pun intended). If it fails, the motor is RS.

Next, check the solenoid, disconnect the leads and apply 12V on one and ground on the other, did it click and the motor run?

If it runs then its the switch or wiring from the handlebars.
