900A4 carb bowls removal

#1 PostAuthor: ddg900 » Sun Feb 12, 2017 5:34 pm

hi all,

I'm blessed (!) with small hands/fingers. My 900A4 could do with the float bowl gaskets on cyls 1 and 2 being replaced (persistent fuel weep despite attempts to check tightness of screws with a 90deg angled screwdriver - not a brilliant fit).

Is it possible to do this with the carbs in-situ? Anybody have knowledge of a screwdriver small enough to do the task?

thanks

Its easy, i use a very small phillips with a hole drilled and a tommy bar through,or a phillips and small socket wrench, put a towel under neath to catch screws, fuel etc.if leaking though you may well have float level issue.Paul J

Ideally carbs off as said, you need to clean /check the mating faces which is just about impossible to do insitu.

Take them off, clean em check needle valves, set float heights and replace all the gaskets because it wont be long before all four start weeping otherwise,

Always a ball ache getting carbs off,on makes it easier if all intake and airbox rubbers supple, take off the starter cover, and the brace across carb tops to get cables off easier, when putting back on only fit centre two airbox rubbers then roll back outer two on them selves and use smooth tyre iron to lever into airbox.

got the little ratchet set today - worked a treat. One loose screw, gave it a tweak, seems to have worked. Good point about the float heights, and I will get round to checking them. Had the fuel pipes off today - noticed that there's a weep from the fuel tap when switched to 'OFF' - looks like the tap's going to need an overhaul as well ..

That can all wait for the next wet weekend - forecast is too good for tomorrow not to take her out for a quick spin :D

its a good tool , but I do find allen heads are better ast they are stronger and you can tighten them up more. you can still remove them in situ if needed as well then

good point, bunny..

I'm not such a rivet-counter that swapping to Allen heads would give me sleepless nights  - far better the bike runs sweetly, and I can attend to those little things that always need doing, with the minimum of fuss.

think I'll look for a replacement carb bowls Allen screw set for the 900A4 next time I get a weeping gasket - its bound to happen again at some point!
