Thanks for reply. I have Some MorriS oils 10/40 semi synthetic that I put in my old car. Being a newly returned old bike owner I'm just finding out whats best to use! Not being cheapskate and happy to spend if the morris oil doesn't suit.
Cheers.

So are we saying that the Semi Synthetic 10w/40 oil "Ideal for petrol and diesel engines inc turbo etc etc" that i was recomended to use by a motor factors shop and tipped into my bike yesterday has to be drained and replaced with specific motorcyle oil ?

I only ever use bike specific oil in mine, there may be nothing wrong with other oils or there may very well be a reason. So that's why I use a bike oil as it gives me peace of mind.

Stick any 10/40 semi in and it will be just fine.
Even the cheapest supermarket own brand is as good or better than the top stuff from the 70's.

In simple terms yes. It has to be suitable for use with wet clutches to prevent slippage.

The majority of oil suppliers are doing bike speciric oils of various grades.
Ive always used putolene or similar without any issues, semi synthetics, but over the winter I have discovered that rockoil and belray are now doing a range of mineral oils of 10 w 40 and 20 w 50, (I have used 20 w50 in yamaha fours in hot weather ) grades.
The rock oil is named as Gamma, and the belray is called Exl mineral.
I will be trying the rock oil in my st 1000 this year, and I will post my opinions at some piont.
I, m sure we all maybe cocern ourselves touch much about these modern oils , and which is best, but most of them are more than suitable. I dont ride my old bikes hard at all , so if these oils can cope in these modern screaming four strokes, I think the internals in my old zeds will be just fine , I think in a lot of cases its just about preference on what oils we use.

I guess in that case, If the clutch slips then I'll change the oil for specific motorcycle oil, if not I'll leave it.
Thanks all for advice.

The Rock oil TRM 20/60 works well .
Formulated for roller bearing cranks and contains long chain molecules.
Been using it in the fine weather only Zeds for a few years now.
