I amazing thinking of changing the wiring loom on my project, the alternator one that is, how do they connect to the copper windings?

I believe they are soldered, lacquered and insulation over the top, that's what i noticed when i disassembled one once out of curiosity, someone may come on who knows for sure.

get a new loom wire from Zpower or equivalent.

I use crimp heat shrink connectors to ensure a good solid connection that won't short out.

.............. get some tight fitting silicon or rubber shield cos the heatshrink that comes with the loom kit breaks down in the oil and shorts, solder the "crimp" terminals and then crush em, and thanks for the name check

Fitted a couple of these David,well cheap and from Electrix world,z power do a loom to suit connect it outside of genny so you dont have to fart around with oil proofing connections,old gennys are usually toasty as 40yr old..Paul J

The kit comes complete with butt connectors and heatshink sleeving. Just solder onto the copper windings.

I had a solder joint come loose whist in Germany last Year on my Z1 (could have been user error). That's why i replaced with crimp/heatshrink connectors - no issue since.

And I had a phase short when the heatshrink failed in the oil replaced them with rubber/silicon tube - no issues since

Chris, I think the originals were soldered, they were on mine. I agree crimp is better though.

Keith, I don't think anyone has thought about suitability of heat shrink in hot oil baths before. I slipped some braided high temp sleeving over it as well. but might do a bit more research.

With the solid copper wires have been soaked in hot oil for 40 years it was tough to get a good solder joint (as I said maybe pilot error) so the all in one crimp/heatshrink connectors seemed a good option.

I tried to crimp mine at first but gave up. If you seem it at the roadside you know why

Well I have managed to put the new harness on, used heatshrink solder connectors, seem okay but time will tell, just a point, the connectors for the neutral switch and oil pressure switch are different, do I change these or use as is ?

David ,I changed the connectors to suit,as an aside, to check genny is ok,test between all the 3 output wires with ohmnmeter they should all be the same,more or less,this will point out any bad or dry connections and/ or dodgy genny,i tested a new one recently before if fitted and was us,might save some grief,Cheers Paul J
