A bit of a worry

#1 PostAuthor: Zedorset » Fri Apr 14, 2017 5:59 pm

My Z1B has started to momentarily jump out of third gear. I am thinking maybe selector fork problem. If I have to strip the gearbox do I have to completely dismantle the engine or can the gearbox be got at by splitting the crankcases, or could this be symptoms of something else. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Check selector forks etc first.

If it is terminal - the cases can be split with top-end intact.
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Thanks for reply.

Are selector forks easy to get at, to check?

once you have gear box out take the oppurtunity to strip and inspect all gears on input and output shats. also i personally would replace all the gear box bearings at same time.
do it right do it once is my ethos.

Dependant on what you do first i.e. dropping the sump plate and trying to remove & check the selector forks for bend & subsequent witness marks of wear and or heat as that ...or worn dogs will cause it to jump out of gear. I personally think you will have to take the clutch off too to be able to withdraw the selector forks rods before the forks will come away from there position on the sliding gears, I,ve never done that before..... as I alway split the cases as you cannot check the dogs properly without doing so . If you find that the forks all appears OK . You might want to pop the transmission outer case off too & just check the shift return spring is set up correctly and the detent spring on the selector drum is sound and not tired ! Personally i'd be doing that first... as it bit easier of a job and it really needs to be done anyway as a matter of course with this type of issue . Good luck & happy hunting. Johny. B

I had this problem with my a4 only it was 2nd gear. My problem was a bent selector fork shaft which is quite easy to rectify without spliting engine, just take sprocket cover off and inner plate you will see end of shaft sticking out with circlip retaining it(you do not need remove circlip) Caution at this point you will need sump removed as the selector forks will drop off shaft as you pull out shaft.(make a note of fork locations to aid reassembly) simply get set of grips and pull shaft towards you it should slide out easily. Check shaft for true with dti or face plate etc.
Good luck

CORRECTION......to part of my above reply post "Samspoons" is correct there...... the Selector Rod & the selector Drum too come out via the Transmission Case ....... I was getting confused between my 900 Kawa & Speed Triple where they come out from opposite sides. Ooop's sorry ! Johny. B.
