1984 Elr carb issue - I think

#1 PostAuthor: Stugill » Sat Apr 15, 2017 7:29 am

Good morning.

I have had some excellent work done by Buzzard on my Elr to sort some stuff that I knew was wrong with it... fins welded, home made helicolis fitted in various places, valves, piston rings, barrells honed and other stuff.

I fitted a Dyna S, replacement coils and the timing was done.

On startup initially.

1,2 and 3 downpipes were hot, downpoipe 4 was virtually cold. There was a good spark on number 4. It ran but was rough, very difficult to raise the revs etc.

I suspected the carbs.

I took off the carbs and cleaned up all of the bits and pieces ( keeping them as a bank of 4 ) and noticed that there was some crap on the small filter on number 4. I was therefore hopeful that by cleaning that out, all would be good. But NO.

I put it all back together and tried to start it and...

This time 1 and 2 were hot, 3 and 4 were not and it barely started. If I blocked the carb intake with my hand then it wanted to fire, but didn't. My hand got fuel on it though.

I hope this makes sense.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Stu

Is sufficient fuel getting to them?
Did you clean out the choke assemblies?
Bet theres some shite in the small galleries somewhere - ultrasonic cleaning required?
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Pigford.

Thanks for the quick reply.

No I didn't clean the choke assembly ( I think ) , I cleaned the 4 carbs individually and cleaned all the removable parts. I will get the manual out and take a look at that soon. To do this would I need to take the bank of 4 apart?

I think it will need to be done properly with ultra sonic cleaning etc as I have nearly done all I can with my kit and level of skills.

I will have a play this morning.

Cheers

Stu.
There is a plug 92066-1087 blocking off the pilot jet 92064-1036.
All of my problems were due to blockage in the pilot jet which, even with just the air filter, caused fuel to blow back through into the airbox.

It was quite alarming to see.

You need the plugs for it to run, they're pretty obvious in the carb

Thanks.

It is the 1000 R2.
There are no plugs and I have another, not very good set of carbs that are for a z1000 r2, they have plugs, however these plugs are too big for my original carbs.

I wonder what carbs have got as the original carbs, that were on the bike when I got it 10+ years ago don't have a hole connecting the pilot jet housing to the needle jet housing. Could my original carbs be off a 1100? I will take some photos. Stu

I played about with the bike this afternoon.

Still the same, runs on 1+2, nothing on 3+4. I swapped the diaphragm about and still the same so I have eliminated them.

When I sprayed easy start in 3+4 it then worked ok for short bursts and sounded ok`ish.

I will get them cleaned ultrasonic and then hopefully sorted.

Cheers

Can anyone recommend a club member / company who does work on carbs? Including ultrasonic cleaning. I am in Hertfordshire, near St Albans.

Cheers

Have you tried a thrashing?.....if it runs fine hot, or on mid/ high throttle it pinpoints the trouble, some welly sometimes clears the trouble as well

Although it runs, it is poor, barely holds the revs.
