Z1000 Brake idiot light conundrum

The idiot light on the 77 z1000 a1 doesn't work. Tail brake light works fine off foot and hand. So I think bulb has blown, nope, bulb is good. So I think maybe a poor/broken wire, Nope, all checks out good. If I take power from the neutral or oil idiot light the brake idiot is on when they are so earth side of the wiring must be good. So I think power to the brake idiot light isnt getting to the bulb through the failure light switch. If I run an low watt inline bulb from the brake idiot bulb live direct to the battery neg it glows very faintly all the time when ign on. Wiring diagram says the failure unit should have a 3 wire connector but I dont have ANY 3 wire connectors under either side panel. So where hell is it?
I assume Im looking for a similar unit to a 77 650 one which is also a 3 wire connector on the rear side of the electrics panel but damned if I can find it, not even an unconnected 3 wire connector.
Who knows where it should be ?

Hi Warren,Its should be under the fuel tank to the rear of the coils, its a grey block thickness of a box of matches, its official title is outage relay,if tail lamp blows this should make the idiot lamp flash on/off.

Hi Paul, its always electrics with me! That'll be why I cant find it under the side panels then! I figured it would do the same as a 650 one just didnt expect it to be anywhere except with the rest of the electricery stuff. Do those symptoms sound like its failed to you?

Yes mate. That was on the black 650 period custom. Sourced a nos rectifier from south america, bolted it on and all was good with the world again.
Just waiting for the dvla to give me a date plate for it then that'll be for sale.

I have just had a look at the diagram and i would say the brake light failure idiot light shares switched (ignition) 12v with the oil pressure and neutral idiot lights (Brown wire) . This would suggest to me that the break is in the indicator light harness after the 12v feed splits.
I think you can rule out the brake light failure switch because this works on the earth side (green/white wire).
Try taking the tail light bulb out and jumping power from the 12v feed to the neutral or oil light. If the brake failure light flashes the switch is working and you have proved the harness is faulty.
I have the harnesses in stock if you need one

Now Ive found it im not surprised it doesnt work looking at the conector block and melted case covered in electrical tape. Stripped all the old tape and crap off cleaned the terminals and swopped for a known good one off my 650 and hey presto it all works again.
So 3 questions? Can i test the old one and how if yes cos it still doesnt work with cleaned terminals, 2 why is it twice the size of the 650 one? And 3 anyone got one or can supply one Dave

?
Seems to be the same part no for 650, 900, 1000 part no 28019-001 although my 650 one is half the size of the 1000 one weird?

Dave....do you do the complete harness for a Z1000A1? to include the 4 connector mini loom under the left side panel that the reg/rec/gene all connect to? I would like to change it all over to new if possible

Warren, the only test i have ever found for these is to plug into a known good circuit, they all do the same job only size differs, they do crop up on ebay usa especially from time to time,i did get an electronics guru to try and reproduce them at one time but costs were prohibitive, glad your sorted it anyroad..Paul J

Mark, I have the 4 connector centre harness that fits everthing except Z1R in stock. PMC do a US spec Z1000A1/2 main harness which I can add to my next order in about 10 days time.
Warren, sorry I have never seen a repro outage switch

Hello Warren,
When my outage relay packed up, the idiot light flashed continually with the ignition turned on.
I managed to source one cheaply from the US, Z750 exactly the same.

yep, I ebay searched the part number on the side of the relay, its used for just about every 70's bike. Picked one up from ebay Germany, 15 euro inc P&P.
