From Zedder.com
Frame No. Range
Japan MFR Z1F-085701 - 117060
USA MFR Z1F-500001 - 510340
Engine No. Range
Z1E086001 - 138846

Makes it a Japan make matching No's bike but doesn't help on its original POS. If its a left hooker it would narrow it down a bit

could someone please refresh me on the various tell tale features that can differentiate origin.
I'm thinking it could have been British territories bike or similar and got imported back to uk at the end of overseas duty.

From memory

Genuine UK A4 would have had the following when new (as different to the your A-typical Yank import).....

Twin Disc with correct 5/8th master cylinder and thinner disc's
long rear mudguard with bracket mounted reflector and different numberplate/light bracket from short type
Seat Strap
Rear grab rail with indicators mounted to 'ears'.
No reflectors on frame OR rear light lens
Different indicator lens front to rear
Headlight and side light
Side panel badges
Handbook (Z not KZ)
