Cylinder head identification

#1 PostAuthor: Gavin » Tue Sep 05, 2017 11:37 am

How can you identify which model a cylinder head came off, the head on a Z1000j looks similar to all the J series and to the head on a Z1100 shaft are there any codes numbers cast anywhere. Same goes with identifying the barrels all I can see is the 998cc but not thing to identify the exact model

All 'J' heads are the same with overbucket shims fitted and the same goes for the 998 barrels.
GPZ11 B heads look similar but have injection ports cast in the head and longer inlet tracts.
GPZ11 unitrack and 1100r heads look identical to the 'J' but have letter 'A' stamped in the inlet tract and twin swirl combustion chamber with bigger valves and run under bucket shims.
Unitrack injection 1089 barrels have threaded boss in rear of block for temp sensor and 1100r carb barrels are the same casting but with the boss unthreaded/blank .
Z1100 shaft have either a 'J' based head or a Unitrack based head depending on model/year but have over bucket shims.
Z1100 1089 Barrels are the same as 1100R.
Pretty much everything is physically interchangeable with only the steeper angle of the Unitracks valves and corresponding pistons to be aware of.

I thought all J engines apart from the Unitrak/Z1100R/ZN1100 engine ran shims over bucket and the Unitrak type engine is the only 900/1000/1100 engine that runs shim under bucket from the factory.

Sorry! my typo
I'll give myself 50 lashings.
Was in a rush when typing and have corrected the info above.
Yes all 'J' are shim on top.
