Oil level

Recently changed oil and filter with 3.7Ltr then ran the bike round the block - Came back and left bike for half an hour or so checked level and oil was just below max Mark so ok - Next day level shows over max Mark - So is this normal and are you only supposed to check after running the engine and leaving to settle for a while ? It does have an oil cooler with pipes attached below cooler - Cheers.
