Prep for 1st start for 5 months

#1 PostAuthor: 1975-S1C » Fri Sep 29, 2017 5:28 pm

Hi chaps,

Having almost finished rebuilding from the barrels up, is there any prep’ that’s advisable before trying to start it ?

I’ve changed the oil and filter, and when I was putting the head on I rubbed a little oil around the cylinders and all over the cams, followers and cam shells. Anything else needed ? Or should I just go for it ?
Cheers

if you want you can remove the plugs & spin the motor over for 30 seconds or so then put the plugs back in & fire it up

Presumably that’s to get some oil pumping around before I fire it up. Sounds like a good idea. I’ll do that.

Did I read somewhere that you’re suppose to re-torque the head nuts after the first ride ?

Cheers

Yep, check the head nuts.
Good luck, not that you'll need it.

^^^ This - at least until the oil pressure light goes out.

Thanks Chris. Noted !

One more question please.
Petrol tap was weeping so I got a seal kit and just fitted it. All good except that the two little filters that sit inside the fuel tank on top of the fuel tap inlet pipe and reserve pipe, are shot !
Any suggestions for where you can get those little fellows ?

There is also one more job perhaps, which is the generator cover has a copy of small dings. It polished up shiny enough, but I think the dings may annoy me, so probably it’s gotta come off and be polished out. Don’t suppose that’ll be as easy as just undo a few screws on the casing ?

Anyways, we are getting close to the start up.
After 5 months of cussing here’s where I’m at, with thanks to you guys for guiding me along and tolerating my steady stream of numpty questions.

Thanks fellas, now got some of those Suzuki ones on order, which should fit according to the dimensions.

The petrol that’s in the tank is about 5 months old. Ditch it ? Or it’ll still be fine ? It’s just the standard unleaded stuff, not the E0 type.
