Head difference

#1 PostAuthor: RussG » Sat Oct 21, 2017 3:59 pm

Hi,
I’m rebuild/moding a Z1000A1, I bought a head off Padders which I think he said was off a MkII? It has some extra “clean air”? holes that are exposed when I fit the A1cam cover. Can anyone explain what they do and whether they are supposed to be covered or open?

Cheers Russ

Just block them off - they're no use.... only fitted to me USA emissions.
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Or use cover with tabs to cover the holes.

I'm confused again. My bike has a mk11 engine, cam cover has little top things that look like they should connect to something that should run up the outside of cylinders. There is nothing though that runs up,the cylinders. Not had cover off yet so no idea what's in there.

You probably have a non emissions cover for the US market.

Hi ianali

in the US in the early eighties of the previous century they worried about emission.
Kawasaki came up with the idea to add fresh air to the exhaust gasses in order to get them cleaner and to be able to meet the US regulations so they could continue selling bikes in the US.
There was a tube coming with a valve connected to it from the air filter body that split into two tubes, these went to each side of the camshaft cover.
In the camshaft cover there was a membrane that opened due to underpressure when the exhaust gasses left the engine. The air was sucked through the holes in the cilinderhead and came out near the exhaust valves thus enabling clean air to be mixed with the exhaust gasses and causing some sort of "afterburner" .
This device was not required for the other markets.
So you have a US cilinderhead and camshaft cover for an MK2 or an ST (similar cilinderheads)
Plug the holes in a descent way and you'll be able to ride your bike.
Good luck !!!
