I suspect that the bevel drive to my water pump is fucked on my Z1300A5. I have removed the impeller cover and the impeller can be turned by hand, which I am assuming suggests the nylon bevel gear is stripped.
Anyone on here done this job and give me any tips? I fear the head will have to come off?

Re: Z1300 Water pump bevel drive
you may have to remove the cylinder head to to do this job ? i have done done a few times on the a1 but the set up is different on the a5 as the pick up coils are under the engine cover the main problem is holding the shaft to undo the bolt that secures the nylon gear. have you removed the inspection cover on the block r?h side under the carbs
Re: Z1300 Water pump bevel drive
have you checked the chain which drives the water pump?

Re: Z1300 Water pump bevel drive
Thanks for the replies.
There is a cover on the LHS that can be removed and shows the chain and sprocket, the other side of the 'wall' from the bevel gears and that is turning with the engine, but the impeller doesn't. I know from it's history that this low mileage engine has eaten one of the nylon gears in the past, so I'm reasonably sure that it will be buggered. I was posting in the unrealistic hope that someone could suggest an easy way to do the job without taking the head off, but I am as certain as I can be that I have no option really. She does smoke a tiny bit, so I'll examine the guides while she's apart and at least change the valve stem seals. I'll also measure the bores while I'm at it. I know the bike had new rings when she last ate and spat out the bevel gear, which might suggest she drank a bit of oil then. Maybe time for a rebore. I'm reluctant to pull the barrels though, as it looks like as though it would be a right bastard of a job refitting them. I have to date managed to avoid the fun of fitting a six cylinder block
Were the lump not so fecking heavy I would pull the whole lump out, powder coat the frame and paint the engine ... but it is

Re: Z1300 Water pump bevel drive
there is a inspection cover like this on the opposite side of the engine to allow you access to the the bolt that secures the bevel gear. removing this cover may give a better indication of what has happened. fitting the block is no more difficult than 4 cylinder

Re: Z1300 Water pump bevel drive
take a look at these pictures they will give you a clear indication of what is involved in replacing the nylon bevel gear
