Ignition Leads

Thinking of replacing the leads/caps on my 79 Z1000 A2. - Excuse my thickness but with the tank removed, can the existing leads simply be unplugged from the coils or are they fixed to the coils ? Also will both Taylor and Dyna 8mm Leads connect to my coils and what's the difference ? Cheers all. :wow

A big NO

Coils are fixed to leads :!:

Ok Cheers - So what are the leads I see advertised which appear to plug into the coil ?

What is the general opinion on "upgrading" coils and leads?
My bike suffers a bit from "weak spark" even though everything seems to be in order (new Kawasaki coils).

Is it worth the money?

Is it worth paying for better plugs?

Ok got it thanks - Whilst not failed yet, I think my stock coils/leads etc are prob all original and I know are prone to fail - Bike has done c14k miles only but how long do stock coils normally last before problems start emerging ? Also I'm now thinking of biting the bullet and upgrading the ignition system over winter - Cost aside, would it be best to install say a complete Dyna elec ignition package inc Dyna coils and leads or just replace the coils/leads leaving the existing points etc - Thanks again.

Hi AlanB

the original coils on a Z1000A2 have a resistance of 5 Ohm, the leads are cast into them and can't be removed.
When you replace the caps, buy good ones! If the leads are still long enough remove about 1 Cm and turn the caps on.
Use the NGK B8ES spark plugs. Don't use spark plugs with the "R". :mad It's not the "R" like in Race, it's the "R" of Resistance and these don't last as long as the standard spark plugs when you make short trips (in my experience anyway).
Make sure your coils are firmly attached to the frame and that there's no rust on the bolts, nuts and frame. :!:
When you replace your original ignition with an electronic one use new coils adapted to the electronic ignition with less resistance!
Good luck!
Greetings from Belgium
Philippe

Thanks Phillipe that's really helpful advice - Looking at Dyna Elec systems so do you know if the Dyna S or Dyna 2000 would be best option for my Z1000 ? Thanks Alan

Have Dyna S and Dyna coils on both my Zeds, works very well improves the spark, but I believe that you need to match the coils (3 ohms).
Some members use Boyer electronic ignition, but I have no experience of this.
Dyna 2000 is generally only used on heavily modified bikes which to maximise potential.

I have just put a dyna s on mine, i put new coils on from Z-power, i won't use dyna coils as they have a tendency to arc , they also split. do not use resistor spark plugs with resistor spark plug caps as you up the resistance and end up with poor running.

Do the wired george ignition mod first. Cost about a fiver and improves standard coil output loads. Easier starting, better idleing and running. Also use denso plugs rather than ngk. Much less hassle.

Hi Alan

I have no experience with Dyna coils or ignition. Sorry!
If you really want to change your points ignition by an electronic ignition why don't you try to find an original one from Kawasaki?
They were factory mounted on the Z1000 MK2,ST,H and on some other models too.
When doing that keep in mind that you have to find the complete set!
The complete set starts with the timing advancer, the pick-up coils plate, the electronic igniter, the resistor and ignition coils! You will allso have to add the wiring between them. This can be found but it's not easy.
When you go for it remember that the hunt is often better than the catch!
When you mount it, you''re bike stays more or less "original".
On the other hand did you try to adjust the points ignition system on your bike?
It's not that hard to do! Several of my bikes (Z1 and Z1R) have still the original ignition system and do run very well!
Buy original points from Kwasaki! They're expensive but last longer.
Good Luck!
