New Valve Shims, where to get them?

#1 PostAuthor: Arctic Fox » Tue Nov 21, 2017 10:46 pm

Are all shims made equal? Any experiences out there on where to buy shims as I see them with prices from £5 - £10 each, so don’t know if there is actually any difference or not?

Thanks,

Just a side note...

They are exactly the same as BMW shims

I imagine they probably all come from the same place just labelled differently, the big names have a whole supply chain that hikes the price every time they move, the little guys buy loose and only make a little. I have bought from a few places and the quality has always been the same.

They do seem to come from different sources - they can have several different types of size markings. I’ve sent them back to wemoto before because the ones they sent had a really rough finish that you could feel with yr fingernail. Genuine ones have a very fine surface finish. I’m not a genuine parts fetishist but in this case it’s probably worth sticking to genuine as they run directly on the cam and there’s no telling what the material used or the surface finish is. I’m a bit more open minded about under bucket shims, maybe I shouldn’t be.

I haven’t used wemoto since then as it wasn’t the first time they’d sent me rubbish slowly. You’ll note that magazines like practical sports bikes and others from the same publisher always seem to get ‘superb quality parts and service from wemoto as always’. Superb advertising deal more likely.
