I think you only need one of these if you have a Z1R with an MK2 engine and electronic ignition.
I think it's the bracket to put the resistor for the ignition coils on. Allthough I'm not sure about it.
If you have a D1 you don't need it.

Pretty sure it was only fitted to the Stateside variant as uk bikes had no requirement for reserve ligthting. Paul ?

I made a mistake, it's the resistor for the light
Keith is right too, you only need it when you have a KZ, the US version, since the European version doesn't have a reserve lighting device.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the European version had a resistor for the light , a green tubular one, attached under the fuel tank to prevent that the light bulb would fail if too much tension was transmitted to it...

Hi Steve

the reserve light is the normal light bulb and the electronic reserve lighting device switched the low light to the high light if the low light failed. You didn't have to turn the light switch from "lo" to "hi", it was done automatic by that electronic device. At the same time a white warning light went on in the rev counter to inform you that the low light failed.
It was ment to warn you that the light bulb needed replacement.
That is on the KZ, the US version. The Z, EU version, didn't have a white warning light in the rev counter.

yes, something like that. Allthough I don't have an EU parts list, only one for a US version of the Z1R, so I don't know for sure if it was used.
Anyway I don't have it on my Z1R (D1, '78) and the light bulb is OK after several thousand kilometers. It's an H4 bulb, maybe that makes the difference?

You may find these helpfull Steve, sorry one is upside down I could not get it on the scanner bed any other way but you should be able to rotate it in adobe reader.

I thought it was a flux capacitor from the quantum acceleator or circuit.

I've been doing a bit more investigating on the new fangled Z1R extras. Reserve lighting system, self cancelling indicators, an amazing readout to tell you how much fuel you have and another gadget to tell you the battery is about to die.

All a bit too futuristic if you ask me. See if any of it works when I put the a the bits back I've pulled out !

Still haven't found the big resistor plate....I'm assuming its fastened to the coils or hidden under the nose cone as I haven't been in there yet.

the resistor is located between the ignition coils if its a us spec bike if its uk spec it will just have the green coloured one bolted to the r/h coil
