The switch comes apart easily enough if you're careful. In fact, I had mine apart today to clean it before the rebuilding of my bike commences...

Mine has the longer stem with the steering lock bolt that comes out vertically from the bottom.
It has a similar wiring set-up as that pictured in post #16 above.

This would be my first choice, but I just wanted to weigh-up my options before breaking the thing into 1000 pieces!

This looks to have the longer stem.
I agree fixing original should always be your first choice if possible. Even if for no other reason it means keeping all the same keys.

Maybe try John Browse?
Re: No spark on 1000J – Fitting Dyna S, advice needed
If yours isn't salvageable it may be worth trying DK as they've broken a few US Js.
Re: No spark on 1000J – Fitting Dyna S, advice needed
Seems like mine is not salvageable. It's clearly been butchered in the past, and is never going to go back into any sort of reliable working order.
This is the bit
Might give it a go.

Now bear with me on this please.
Ok, so I bought a new ignition switch from the USA, but still have the same issue. I have a 7 wire switch, US version J.
Checked out the connections in the switch with the key in various positions according to the manual, and everything connects up as it should.
Putting switch in the "on" position connects the white/black power-in lead to a white wire out. With the block in the headlight disconnected there is continuity in the main loom between this white wire and the brown wire coming back into the switch. The brown wire then connects to the yellow/red that goes to the starter button. So, (in theory?) if the white wire has battery power (from the white/black power-in wire), and the white lead has continuity with the brown wire, then the brown wire should have the same 12V battery power (because there's continuity)?
BUT THE BROWN WIRE HAS NO POWER !!
What's going on?
Am I missing something really obvious here?
A few weeks ago the bike ran fine, and then just developed a mis-fire.

Having checked all the fuses several times before and everything seeming ok, I just checked again as an act of desperation.....
