Oil drain bolt won't budge.

#1 PostAuthor: garyd » Mon Jan 01, 2018 3:02 pm

What's the consensus on getting this out without stupid ammounts of brute force....which always worked in the past... but this is on the Z1 so don't want to risk it.

Wip the sump off, will give you more options and make it easier to work on,plus you can clean out the sump and pump mesh filter,if it does knacker up its an easy fix with a 14mm timsert or similar, have had to do this meself in the past, good luck..

If you can`t run the engine to warm it up what about applying a bit of heat the cases around the bolt with a blow torch

Take the sump off, it's pretty easy to do once you've taken the exhaust off.

One or two thoughts come to mind -

I know you said without brute force but You could try more leverage -
using whatever is available or put the socket handle through a ring spanner
If you are using a socket - make sure it is hexagonal (as opposed to the ones that just make contact on the 'corners' of the bolt) - that way it should not round it off.
additionally for a bit of extra oomph - you could -
Lie on the floor making sure your feet are against something immovable (like a wall) and pull slowly
& if it is really stuck - be careful not to pull the bike over!

for it to be that tight sounds like it is cross threaded, you may find it more difficult to remove with the sump off as it will be difficult to mount it securely while you apply the needed force, heat up in situ,a hot air gun will do,and then use a long bar

Try a squirt/ soak of penetrating oil while you are waiting to have another go.
It's probably not gonna get in but you never know and it is cheap enough if you have some around.
It certainly won't make it any worse.
Good luck with the extraction !!

1/2 inch drive torque wrench with the correct size socket, the torque wrenches are slighly longer then the set ratchet but not stoopidly long to give you too much leverage and you can increase the torque as you get braver/more desperate

Well...even a good quality socket could'nt get any grip on the cheese that passes for metal.

So a 16mm multipoint was 'persueded' to fit and after a bit of fear and sweat....it just 'clicked and could be undone by had.
Looks like a call to Zpower for a nice new genuine peice of cheddar is in order.

Thanks for your help guys but happy to see that good old brute force is still one of the best ways to achieve results :biggrin
