Z1A helmet hooks

Please advise the correct finish for the helmet hooks on a Z1/very early Z1A? Mine are black, but after after I have cleaned 40 years of crud off them I cannot tell if they should be a painted gloss finish or dull (the undersides look like they are chemical black like the rear footrest mounts). I am guessing they are actually painted (and have lost their lustre) because they are steel, rather than alloy or marzak.
If anyone is interested, I can post some pictures of the components fitted to what looks to be a very original and early USA spec Z1A: original fittings all as fitted to a Z1. e.g. rectifier, regulator, solenoid, wiring loom, lights (including sealed beam unit), brake hoses, paint set, all the usual coded parts, etc etc. Apart from rear shocks, grab rail and exhausts, as far as I can see it is unchanged since August 1973.
