I started to reassemble the bottom end of my engine and gearbox today and noticed some strange looking wear on the input shaft first gear (the one that is part of the shaft). I've tried to attach a photo - the wear actually looks a lot worse in the photo than real life but there are little ridges on the face of each tooth that can be felt with a finger nail so I presume the shaft should be replaced? All of the other gears look fine including the corresponding first gear on the layshaft.
Has anyone come across this before? Has anyone got a decent input shaft they want to sell for a Z1000A1/2? I've seen one one Ebay listed as a Z1/Z900/Z1000 shaft but are they all exactly the same?
Thanks! Rob

I Don’t know much about gear shafts. But that shaft does look mullered.

It's difficult to tell from the photo but I'd guess there's an imperfection in the hardening causing the the surface to break up.
Either way, you need a fresh one.
And if the corresponding output gear shows any ware marks l'd replace it as well.

Re: Worn or Worn Out?
Hello mister,
Had a look - the spare one I’ve got is showing similar wear, though possibly not quite as bad. I guess it’s not an uncommon issue.
According to t’internet its adhesive wear, the marks are caused by the two load bearing faces momentarily welding together under load, likely caused by poor lubrication. Crap oil then, or car engine oil maybe?
Anyway, you are welcome to my gearbox bits if you want them, tho expect you’ll want to find something mint if you can.

Re: Worn or Worn Out?
Thanks for the offer but I’ll look out for something with no wear on the tooth faces.
