Throttle response

#1 PostAuthor: Scot08 » Wed Jan 17, 2018 12:24 am

I’m trying to get my 1985 Z11R runnning better, the engine is standard but I have a new set of RS34’s fitted, the engine idles fine but won’t take any throttle? As i open the throttle the engine starts miss firing,
I’ve checked my cam timing , fitted new spark plugs
I have a standard 4 into 1 exhaust and I’ve tried running With and without the baffles, no change,
The carbs are new from Minuki,,I’ve changed the mains to 130,s to seee if this made any difference, again no change,
Any help, suggestions or set up instructions would be great
Cheers guys

Your mains will be a little big. Try 125, needle on middle clip and pilot 1/4-1/2 turn.
I suspect either the pilot is too far out, something has come adrift or it’s not a carb problem.

Is the ignition spot on and advancing/retarding?

sounds like an ignition problem try holding the ht lead to the head with a pair of insulated pliers & gradually move it away & sea how far the spark will jump . spark should be blue & should jump at least 8mm gap

Does sound like ignition, my Unitrak 1170 engined J has RS34s, mine worked straight out of the box with 125 mains and no other changes.
I had misfiring problems when I bought the bike and I changed the ignition to Dyna 2000 because I thought the ignition wasn't advancing from the tickover advance, from memory the standard ignition runs very little or no advance at tickover, then goes to 10 degrees advance at about 1500 rpm and then gradually goes to 38 degrees at about 4000 rpm.
If you fit Dyna 2000 you will need the engine casing from a Z1000J, if you fit a DYNA S you will need the mechanical advance from a J as well.
New Unitrak igniters are available from CMSNL, but they're nearly £700.

Guys thanks, for the reply’s , I’ve thrown on a set of standard carbs and the symptoms are the same, so yes it’s looking at ignition issues,
I have dnyo ignition coils and Taylor leads fitted , and all the plugs are sparking well, I’ve taken the pick up engine casing off to check the advance mechanism and there isn’t one, ??
Just the two pickups and the plate which generates the spark, no mechanical advance unit at all,
I Had an 1981 J model previously that had a mechanical advance, should my engine have one,
Confused. com : :??

1100R has the same engine as a Unitrak, ignition advance is done electronically by the igniter box, I've got one you can have, but I suspect it is knackered and doesn't advance.
You should be able to test the ignition advance with a timing light as I appreciate the £360 for a Dyna 2000 isn't cheap (you'll also need a casing and oil seal)

Ok guys,

I agree with the general consensus that’s it an ignition problem, so I have a 1986 GPZ 1100 as a parts bike and it had an newtronic electronic ignition system fitted, everything is there so I’m in the process of changing the casings and fitting the system on to my bike, hopefully should be done tonight, it’s been lying for 20 years so finger crossed it still works,
Thanks for all information it’s invaluable

If that's the optical ignition, make sure you set it up in a shaded garage - sunlight can mess it up when timing!

An update,

So I fitted the newtronic ignition system only to discover a faulty pick up on the 2&3 cylinder pickup, after some investigation I found that the very fine wires between/joining the pickups had couple of breaks in them so I’ve scrapped this option.
So this morning I spoke to SAISEI and bought a Dyna S electronic ignition for the bike,
Hopefully it will be here on Saturday morning, :D :D :D
Cheers lads

So today the dyna S electronic ignition arrived, ( excellent service from SAISEI as normal) they were on the phone before I even opened the package, so fitted the system very straightforward and set the timing and the bike runs perfectly, I’ve set the needle on the on the middle clip, and the idle screws are 1/4 turn out, but I’m running 130 jets which without a road test due to 12” of bloody snow the bike seems to like, time will tell,
So thanks everyone,
I’m hoping for some mild weather to melt the snow, can’t wait to get out on the bike for a proper run,
I was thinking, I’ve had the bike out for a run a few months ago and didn’t notice the crap running engine , so I’m just wondering of these old exciter units fail slowly over time, other than a quick failure,
Cheers all
John. :D :D

What air filters and exhaust are you running, 130 sound a bit big, but might be right with open carbs.
How much advance have you set it to?

Run with 130 for now although I too feel they are a little big.
I can't stress enough how much a fueling run on a dyno will help.
