camchain service limit

#1 PostAuthor: ChrisB » Mon Jan 29, 2018 11:20 am

Starting the rebuild of my z1000A1 engine and am replacing the camchain as they're not expensive. Checking things as i go, my camchain only measures 149mm over 20 links. Other posts going back years have quoted a length of 155-156mm and my genuine kz1000 workshop manual says Standard is 160mm with a service limit of 162.4mm.
Have i lost the ability to use a rule or has anyone else found themselves in this confusing place?

Hi Chris
as soon as you rebuild an engine, don't bother about the lenght of the camchain, replace it! And replace all the other camchain parts too! When you replace them and you start your engine you can be sure it will run for thousands of miles without any worries.

Hi Paul
oh I didn't understand it that way. I thought he was talking about his old camchain...as far as the dimensions of the new one are concerned I have to be honest, I never measured a camchain, old or new. As long as you have ordered the right one with the correct number, you don't have to worry about the lenght. For a Z1000A1 or A2 it should have 122 links, for an A3 or an ST it should have 124 links. I hope Chris has the correct one.

Hi guys
checked some things about the camchain:
type: DID 219 T 122 links
lenght of 20 links:155.48 mm ( standard) 157.80 mm ( worn)
DON'T FORGET: the lenght of 20 links count 21 pins: you have to start measuring from the centre of the first pin to the centre of the 21 st pin! If you don't do it that way you don't get the correct lenght.
Hope to have helped you
Greetings

Yeah, i'm replacing it anyway (like always). My concern now is that my genuine manual seems to be different to Z1Bman's.
New one hasn't arrived yet but i changed one in my other Z a few months back and had the same measuring difficulties. Engine runs fine though!
