cylinder base o rings

#1 PostAuthor: ChrisB » Mon Jan 29, 2018 2:35 pm

my 1000A1 didn't have the o rings around the cylinder sleeves when i stripped it and it wasn't leaking oil. I've just had a sit down after seeing that they cost 7 quid each!
I'm questioning what it is that they do now.
Any thoughts on their essentialness guys?

Hi Chris

if there are no O rings at the cylinderbase, don't mind. On some cylinders there are, on others there aren't.
If you know your engine doesn't loose oil at the cylinders never mind. If you're not sure about the oil loss put new O rings on the cylinderbase as long as you have a groove to put them in.
It all depended on what kind of cylinders they had in stock at the factory or if someone replaced the early cylinders in the past years with more recent ones...
Having restored many Z1000 engines the past years, some had O rings on the cylinderbase, others didn't.
Basically they used the O rings to prevent oil creeping between the steel of the sleeves and the aluminium of the cylinderbank. If they had any use? I don't know...
Good luck
Philippe
