Tank issues

#1 PostAuthor: damien.wrl » Tue Feb 13, 2018 12:17 pm

I have seen tons of stuff on here about tank liners etc, my original tank apart from a chip and a dent is pretty good , I am reluctant to change it but the inside is pretty manky, surface rust no flaking ..my mechanic says it will do but has anyone had experience of a company who can clean and protect the inside of the tank long term ... not to keen on vinegar/coke and wd40 solutions...

My J came with a tank that had some sort of sealant in it, the petrol gradually dissolved it, staining the petrol brown, this then blocked the pilot jets, just to add insult the tank leaks.
I've got another tank now which doesn't leak or again the petrol.
So be careful how you seal it.

I'm not sure what to do with my old tank I'm tempted to cut the base away from the top, get both halves grit blasted, and then weld the two halves back to each other, or just use the upper half as a cover for a smaller tank underneath as I only need a 10 litre tank capacity.

If the tank doesn't leak don't put sealer in it ( I personally hate the stuff )
It causes more trouble than it's worth in the long run and if it did leak then get someone to repair it properly and have it welded.
I would just do as Savage suggests and mechanically remove as much surface rust as possible by the hand full of hex nuts method then treat it with a neutraliser.
Swill it out a few times with petrol then never let the bike sit with an empty tank.
I'd also drain the tank once in a while to remove any water that has collected in the bottom for future protection.
The water that gets in there is mostly from the petrol station .

Hi Guys

i use "Restom", it's a French brand and i'm very satisfied. It comes as a kit with a degreaser, a deruster and a two component resin.
When used and applied properly it holds " for ever". It's available for steel, aluminium and polyester fuel tanks and for small and large fuel tanks.
It takes about two days to prepare the inside of the fuel tank (degreasing and derusting) and in between the two products it's adviced to clean the fuel tank with aceton. After the inside of the fuel tank is completely dry you can mix the two components of the resin and pour it in the fuel tank.
You have to turn the fuel tank around to make sure the resin reaches all the corners and covers them with a thin layer. Even small holes are cured. After a week the resin is hard and resistant to fuel (even to E10). I used it several times and had no problems whatsoever.
The price for a kit for a Z900 or Z1000 fuel tank is ( or has been) 56 Euro.
Cheers
Philippe

Get the dent removed by a pro and clean by electrolysis.

Going to get the dent removed and touch up the “chip”. Looking for suggestions , electrolysis? Some sort of electroplating ?

if its surface rust on the inside only leave it,probably another 20 years life left in it if the bike is used and cared for

Electrolysis will only work in part as there is no way to get a decent enough shaped cathode in the tank to allow you you to do the job correctly, best way is to use a mild brick cleaning solution which is generally a weak hydrochloric acid swill it around until no visible rust rinse with plenty of water, then put through a gallon of Di water dry quickly, fill with petrol add a stabilizer or small amount of STIHL 2 stroke oil every time you fill up, been doing this for years and never have a problem.
