Shim Tool

Hi

I have bought one of the laser shim changing tools off ebay and its not exactly easy to use ..... unless I am doing it wrong of course

Would I be better laying out on the Kawasaki one or is there a tutorial I can watch ?

That’s my preferred choice.

I have one of those laser ones and have no problems, a little fiddly to start with but you learn as you go and it becomes easier.

I've just bought one of these cheap tools too. Anyone care to explain the best method of using them?
Looks like you rotate engine until bucket is fully depressed, insert tool on the lip of the bucket, rotate engine backwards until cam lobe is out of the way, prise out and replace shim, rotate engine forwards until cm lobe is depressing bucket again, remove tool.
Is this correct? It looks a bit small and liable to pop out at the wrong moment!

I use the same tool but by Motion pro.
Very easy to use once you get the knack.
Don't bother with the little pry bar though just rotate the cam enough to get the plate on the edge of the bucket then rotate back just enough to get clearance to remove the shim.
Keep hold of the plate whilst rotating the cam to stop it moving or tipping sideways.
I also ground a slight chamfer along the edge that sits on the bucket to prevent it catching the shim.
I should point out that I use APE style manual tensioners that can't back off when turning the crank backwards so if you have a stock or auto one you need to watch for that.
