Petrol tap....

#1 PostAuthor: damien.wrl » Tue Mar 13, 2018 7:45 pm

Minor little niggle ......Bike not been used for a few years, petrol tap is very stiff, reserve is easier to select than main fuel which is very stiff, can’t seem to see any info on how it works, lots about the diaphragm, will just working it back and forth loosen it or cause more harm...

I had all sorts of problems with the original tap, I purchased an oem copy, turned out to be rubbish. I bit the bullet and got a Pingel high flow petcock, no more problems. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but if I ever buy another classic Japanese bike a pingel petcock will be the first thing on the shopping list.

There are some cheap copies about. PMC ones seem ok.

Hi Damien
what kind of petrol tap is it? A Z1000A1 or is it a younger type (A2 '78 )?
Anyway, unscrew it from the fueltank and disassemble it, clean it, put it back together with new O-rings. The problem should be solved then.
Greetings

Hi Damien
as far as I can see I think it's a Z900A4 fuel tap because of the 90 ° angle of the two copper exit pipes.
Buy a repair set for it and change the O-rings, that should solve the problem. Or is it a replica fuel tap?
Good luck!

Ah .. not mine, mine looks identical but the exit pipes are parallel and both out the rear

Hi Damien
you tried to fool me, you naughty boy! :mad
No, just joking, in that case you have a Z1000A1 fuel tap.
Remove the little crosshead screw and the lever will come out. Unscrew the sediment cup and take the dirt out. Clean everything, replace the O-rings, reassemble (make sure it's the correct little crosshead screw, not too long) and enjoy the ride!

Be careful when stripping the Tap. The plastic barrel inside which the lever connects to controls the flow and is easily damaged. It then can allow fuel past even in the off position. The o-ring repair kits that are available will stop external leaks but not repair the barrel. If it wont shut off then it's a new tap, and the pattern one's are not the best.
