How do I get the carbs off as the airbox on an A4 is tight up against the frame ?

Remove the carb to airbox rubbers first, cables, pipes, undo the front clips, pull carbs back remove from left side, job done.

Interesting tip about removing the rubbers first, something that I've never done before on my A4 but will for sure try. About 10 years ago, I took the carbs off a few times within a month as I thought there was something wrong with them. I got to the point where I could get the carbs off & on without bother and with the rubbers in place.
I've just taken the carbs off for a clean out, it took me about 2 hours to get them off! They'll be going back on without the airbox to start with until I'm sure all is well.
Daft question, I'm guessing you put the carbs back on first, then put the rubbers on?

gently warm the rubbers with a heat gun until supple while they are still in the air box then spray with wd40 or silicone spray its a 2 minute job

Yes put the carbs back on first, if the rubbers are hard, bin them and buy new, beats a lot of huffing and puffing.

An old post, but I am in the process of having to deal with the carbs.

It was very difficult to get them out and not looking forward to re-fitting them. However, I have seen this post about removing the carb to air box rubbers to ease removal/refitting?

My understanding is that the rubbers are clamped to the front face of the airbox with a screwed plate so how do you go about removing and refitting the rubbers with the carbs in place?

i´m not sure with the A4.. cant you get access from the inside of the airbox and pull them back into the box?

Last time I did this was with a Z650. Make them soft with heat, press them totogether on the back from the inside of the box and pullthem backwards into the box.

as kev replied in 2018: if the rubbers became hard, replace them with new ones. Those are easy to fit on the airbox and easy to fit on the carbs. Saves a lot of time and effort!

You may get the carbs back in with old ones, but getting a good seal is almost impossible,

The existing rubbers are perfectly soft and pliable.

My question was how do you physically remove and replace them in situ, as they are secured by a clamping plate that is screwed from the front of the airbox which are inaccessible with the carbs fitted?

They can't be removed from the inside of the airbox.

They’re not clamped in the air box just held by a groove. Slacken the clips on the carb until they slide towards the middle of the rubber. Then squish the rubbers to get them out. Two inner ones on mine were hard as cats heads so I replaced them with new and replacement was so much easier.

"secured by a clamping pate": you dont need to remove that plate (I assume you refer to No. 8 in the pic). As said before they are just hold by a groove.

If you dont get them out, destroy them. Yu will replace them anyway.

Sprint the clamping plate holds wire gauze inside the air-box, if rubbers are nice and soft its an easy job only takeing a couple of minutes for each rubber.

Yes it is #8 on the parts list that I was concerned clamped the rubbers in place, but as pointed out that secures the inside meshes.

So hopefully I will be able to remove and refit them without much hassle?
