Hi guys, i've been offered a Z1000R at very reasonable money. I was wondering if anyone knew how to check if its a genuine one or a copy? Am iI right in saying that the sixth or seventh letter of the frame number should be an R? Also do the frame and engine numbers match? or is it the usual 500 or so numbers out?

Thanks Glav

I have a Z1000R frame on my workbench and can confirm that the Z1000R 1982-83 frame numbers start with KZT00R.
My bike is a Z1000R2 and my frame number is KZT00R-006420 and has a 19 inch front wheel.

The home page is http://kz1000r.com/ but you will get a 403: Forbidden message.

But some pages do still work like the one that chrisw1 posted and this one for downloads http://kz1000r.com/downloads/

I'm not sure if kano is still active on the web.

Was Kano still running it? It would be a shame if it went tits up as it had all the registry information. We contacted them as a club a couple of years ago when whoever was running it was complaining about hosting fees offering to support it but they never responded.

That’s an interesting number - does that mean the all frame numbers were sequential irrespective of the prefix? If there were 4300 Uk/Euro/row bikes and 1200 US and they started at 1101 they’d have had to be added together to get past 6400. So for instance there would only be one 1403 irrespective of the prefix rather than a KZT00R-001403 AND a JKAKZCR1* DA001403? Otherwise on a run of 4300 the last Euro bike would have been KZT00R-005400... where’s the registry when you need it...?

The last email address I had for Kano was kano@kz1000r.com

I have made a mistake - I quoted the wrong frame number.

My frame number is KZT00R-006421 and KZT00R-006420 is another Z1000R2 originally owned by Chris Mullen also here in New Zealand. Mine was white, his was green.

I was looking in to VIN numbers and found this document - it may be of interest to you: http://www.thisoldtractor.com/mg_manual ... cation.pdf

Would any happen to know if the engine and frame numbers matched or were in close proximity to each other on the Z1000R's?

If not how would you tell if it was the original engine?

The engine and frame numbers won't be anywhere near - the R2s started at 1101 as mentioned above and they were using the same engine sequence as Js so they were already at JE 039301 in the first R2 according to the info available. I don't imagine they built them all at once and I guess they could have been sharing with J3s, so they are probably spread all over. So in short no easy way to know, except if it’s an R2 it probably shouldn't be earlier than 39301, and if you can find someone with one with a similar frame number there engine number should be in the same sort of area.

The register would have been help here as there were quite a few on it and patters could be spotted, it would bet bad news if the guy has let it lapse, it passed through several "custodians" and he was supposed to be looking after it as it was community property in a way...

For what it’s worth mine’s in the mid 3s the engine’s in the 42s which seems reasonable.
