Can anyone tell me if the selector cover behind the sprocket differs between the z1 and the a4 .....
This one is for sale on ebay but states its for 1976 onwards and my bike is a Z1b

They are all the same up to the Z1R D1.
It is the later square cam cover MK2/ST/LTD type motor that has a slightly different inner cover.
