A4 Shim Lapping ?

#1 PostAuthor: cancunia » Wed Jul 04, 2018 4:40 pm

Anyone know if the stock shims are made of tool steel or simply case hardened? I have just 1 shim that needs about 0.03 - 0.05 mm lapped to bring it into spec so am thinking about some grinding paste on a piece of glass & lapping the underside.

As Mark says, case hardened ,not a good idea to remove material or grind asking for trouble..

lapping will be fine , you will only about 1 thou off each side , case hardening will be a lot deeper, probably 10- 15 thou per side
