This is kinda what I'm trying to avoid !

Won't make a difference when the bike is on the move.
A cooler fitted is better than no cooler at all.
Best to run the hoses between the intake rubbers so that the oil has the shortest run and they aren't in the way of carb removal.
Could do with lowering the cooler on it's mount to so you have room to run the hoses inwards, between the frame rails and over the camcover.

On the standard R they run exactly that route

It's a German one Frank Mura from the caption, I collect pics of nicely done ones when I see them :D :D :D for reference and inspiration...

Why is it good for the oil to have a short run to the cooler, wouldn't long hoses work as extra cooling surface?

Hoses are basically insulated so will have little or no bearing on the cooling of the oil.
You want the shortest, quickest path for the oil to travel from the pump to the main gallery, especially on initial start up from cold.
Having the hose fittings on top of the cooler help a lot as the cooler remains full but the hoses themselves still drain back and the shorter they are the quicker the oil gets to the crank and cams.

This is how I ran mine, using a 10 row cooler gives a bit more clearance. Yours looks like a 13 row?

That's pretty much how mine run, except I have the hoses coming up between the carbs and the head.

Yes, 13 row I think.
I'm guessing you don't have standard wiring?
I reckon that I can run a hose through the right side gap in the frame, but the left has the standard wiring loom (about an inch thick !) going through the gap and I'm not sure a hose will fit too.
I may get both hoses through one gap, but it could be a bit of a tight fit !

I just thought it would run a bit cooler taking the hoses behind the carbs rather than running them down the back of the engine?

I agree, but the hoses I had were only long enough to run how I've run them :D

So, I re-routed the hoses to run under the tank and adapted the bracket holding the radiator to allow more space through the front of the frame triangle.... only to find that the hoses were then not quite long enough to bolt onto the radiator without being in tension and with some sharp bends :x
I could have re-routed again to bring them directly behind the engine, but wanted to avoid extra heat as much as poss.
Simple solution was to order a couple of 90 degree shoulder joints to connect the hose ends to the radiator, which has neatly got over the hose length and sharp bend issues. So now I have exactly what I set out to achieve, hoses coming out the top of the radiator, away from heat sources (as much as poss) and now tucked nicely away.
Job done :D
Thanks for all of your input lads :up
