what happens if you put a live feed to the thin black wire on the solenoid?

then your problem is the black wire from the solenoid back to the switch. does the engine turn over if you put a live feed to the black wire that goes into the main harness where all the switch wiring connect? have you done a resistance check on the black wire under the tank to the black wire to the solenoid

I connected the black under the tank to the live and the engine turns over, then I dropped the end of the wire that I had put on the battery, it went to earth and the engine turned over. I'm very confused.

what colour wires are on your solenoid & what colour wires are they connected to on the harness ?

Yellow and black also black both connected to the same colours.

which end of the wire touched earth? the one connected to the battery or the one connected to the black wire?

I've put it on my trailer and taken it to a local bike shop, they will now sort the wiring. Thanks for all of your help and advice.
