wiring problems

#1 PostAuthor: GinjaDave » Mon Jul 16, 2018 1:18 pm

I'm restoring a Z1000 A1 and have put a new wiring loom in that I got from Z power. I can't get it to turn over with the starter button, I have connected the starter solenoid directly to the battery and it turns over but no spark, Are there any common idiosyncrasies with these replacement looms? (apart from the oil pressure and neutral light being the wrong way round)

Have you wired in the clutch switch? the thou has a switch in the clutch, lever so you need to pull clutch in start motor, its the blue wire in the loom if i remember correctly...

I have no clutch switch, so I have now ordered one. Sometimes things are staring you in the face. Thanks for the help I'm sure that will be it.

to bypass the switch just connect the two black wires together

I've found an old switch from another bike, the black from the horn side has a double female connector, so I put the black from the starter side and the black from the loom, (stick with me) the temporary switch had a brown and a green Male, I connected them to the spare brown and yellow/black female.

Now when I press the horn the engine turns over and there is no spark, starter button does nothing.

if the yellow and black wire has power at the coils, black wire is the problem , black wire runs from starter solenoid to starter switch, with clutch switch in between to make connection

I checked for continuity between the back from the starter button and the red and yellow, expecting there to be none until the button was pressed, there was continuity all of the time until the kill switch was put into the stop position, then I only had continuity when the button was pressed. I think there is a short in the switches, I'm going to have to take them apart.

you need to check the kill switch. the brown wire should be live when the ignition is switched on & the yellow/red is live when the kill switch is in the on/run position

Iv'e checked the above and both are correct. I have also checked the black from the starter button and when I press it I only get 7 volts. I dismantled and cleaned it, but still the same. any ideas?

what type of switches do you have? the a1 switch wiring runs through the handlebars & has single bullet connectors if you have this type the black wire from the r/h switch connects to one of the wires in the clutch switch the other black wire from the clutch switch connects to the black wire coming from the main harness

The bike was pretty much a basket case when I got it and the switches had block connectors on, I replaced them with bullets so they can connect to the main harness. probably z900 switches. I replaced the blue handlebars that were on the bike with some Z ones from Z-Power, so the wiring doesn't run through them. I have tried cutting out the clutch switch by connecting the black from switches to black from loom, but that makes no difference.
