Would I be right in thinking the Z1000 J1-2 & GPZ1100B1-2 Ignition system would run OK on a 1975 900 .....i.e. has the same amount of rev's for the advance curves & degree's ? i.e. range is 20 rising to 40 degrees BTDC reached at 2350 rpm ? Cheers Johny B

I trust Rob's judgement and it may work that way,I went the opposite way and i ran a z1000mk2 ignition on a gpz engine and it fried it when it got hot the pistons detonated around the edges.
Personally I would say just buy a dyna s and be done with it. Gpz stuff is still 30 years old and does not use the mechanical advance found on early motors.

Thanks for your above input & thats appreciated & interesting.... although I don't want Dyna components ! ...I never provided all the info in my post ( sorry ! ) this as I wanted to know if the ignition components for a Z1000J - GPZ1100 b- 2 would actually run OK on a 1975 900. I wonder if the issue you had may have been down to the fact that the Ignitor unit of the MK2 probably could not interact & handshake with the ECU fitted on the the GPZ ???? maybe that might have caused ignition timing issues & your subsequent motor damage ? ...I don't know... it's just a thought ?????
I have been running a 1978-9 MK 2 complete ignition pack on my 900 for many, many years now ( 37 actually ) with no issues at all ! I recently bought as spares a used Z1000J - GPZ1100 pick up & backplate assembly ...as it all looks and measures up exactly the same as the MK 2 one that I'm currently using = Hence the reason for my post . I just thought that it would be sensible to ask if there was any known reason why I couldn't use this.... if it was called on one day ! I presume from Robs above YES reply.... that the timing spec's for a 900,s are compatible . We are also in this instance ...now only talking about the ignition Pick -Ups ... every thing else (excluding coils ) would remain the std MK 2 items including the MK 2 mechanical A /R unit. My apologies for any un-intended confusion . Cheers.

Jonny,
The setup I ran was a complete z1000mk2 pickups and mk2 cdi box. There was no GPZ components igniter components involved. It was running carbs so no ecu.

The issue was the mk2 cdi has a different advance curve hence the issue I had.

At the end of the day the pickups themselves are dumb and will work on anything (my mate runs gsxr pickups on a cb900f) its what the cdi does with their inputs and subsequent output that is the challenge.

As you say if you keep the right advance unit the MK2 one then it should be fine.
