I have a z1000st fitted with 28 mm acceierator carbs and the problem is, if i blip the throttle from idle. It does not return to idle but stays at 3000 rpm and stays there. Only when i switch the bike off and restart the engine again does it return to idle. has any one experienced this?

Has it suddenly started to do this or has it always done it.
Usual suspects to check =
Throttle cables frayed or adjusted incorrectly - If they are too tight the idle will hang.
Air leaks on inlet rubbers or vac cover missing off one of the vac ports.
Carbs way out of balance.
Also worth checking that the ignition cam/rotor is free to rotate, not sticking.

I have put new throttle cables on and resealed the in let rubbers. I checked the ignition cam rotor and the bolt was loose. The bike is going for an mot re test tomorrow, i am hoping this is the problem.

I still have the problem of the revs holding at 3000 RPM, decelerating whilst riding. The ignition rotor was loose, i have tightened this. there is an noticeable improvement in that the revs hold at 3000rpm and not 5000rpm.
Apart from this the engine is running well

Hi Dunlop4
remove the timing advancer, disassemble it, clean out the old grease, clean it again, put new heat resistant grease inside and reassemble. Tighten the mounting bolt to 2,5 kg-m (18,0 ft-lbs) of torcque. Things might be better...if not, you can be sure that the timing advancer is not the cause.
