Engine standing 9 years

#1 PostAuthor: Gavin » Fri Dec 07, 2018 3:49 pm

I have been asked look at a Z1000, although it’s all there I do know the engine has not been turned over for quite a few years and is out of the bike in the corner of a Garage the rocker cover has been unbolted and put back in position but not sealed, is there anything to be wary of or advise.

Obviously get the rocker cover off to see if there's any corrosion.

Then see if it will turn over using the kick start. I used to be able to start my Z900 by hand when the bike was warm...so there should be little resistance. Clearly if it doesn't want to move then it'll need a rebore and pistons.
Unless the garage was really damp the gears/crank shouldn't have been affected.

Seen some pretty awful looking engines broufght back from the dead, so always worth doing...as long as the starting price reflects the work needed.

The engine was taken out to paint it as far as I can remember it was running spot on, the engine turns with the kickstart no problem, the bike has 62,500 on the clock, when I had it 20 yrs ago it had 57,000,
the black on the engine is less than good and it appears that it has had a brush paint at some point or 3 or 4 by the looks,
As I plan to strip the engine down to sort the paint out and considering the mileage should I think about having the bores honed and new rings or go for a rebore and oversize pistons/rings

hi, gavin, your original post never clearly stated that you knew the bike. i pictured a crusty, dusty clunker covered in dust but looks like a GEM mate   a de-coke, hone and new rings might suffice if the bores look ok upon inspection, or 1st over at worst. I'd advise taking the sump pan off to clear any residual sludge out n check the oil pump n pick-up too.should be a great asset for 2019. m

That is a result. Paintwork does not look too bad, mostly complete. Good luck with the project.

Awww the fabled MkII is that Luminous Blue? I bid on one of these, And lost out to a Japanese bidder, I always liked the angular look, and kinda proud to own the first, the Z1R, but you don't see so many MkII's .

Right guys need some advice on this project, most of the bike is pretty good, however, the first thing I have seen are the cams, will these be ok to reuse or do I need to find replacements or can they be refurbished somehow.
These are the worse of the corrosion

Hi Gavin, the lobes are case hardened, I got away with polishing an XT500 cam, I wouldn't have them built up, it's a no no, D&K break motors, but it would have to be out of 3rd gen motor, bear in mind though the other place that would suffer corrosion is the crank, if you've any corossion on the hyvo it would be wise to full strip and refurb, better safe than sorry. :D

Gavin

you are way ahead of me with your project mk2

I bought the remains of a MK2 that had been used for a Harris build way back in 1990
rolling chassis tank and panels
I have found over the years most of the bits and know what I can get new so think its time to start putting the bits together to find out what more I need as its a 1978 reg on the frame its in the free Tax and mot sector from Jan 19 :D which gives it preference over other bikes in line for work in my book
