Could be a race team.
I know some racers restamped their own engines for identification.
Depends what you want to do with it.

From memory the number block should have a raised lip around the edge to help spot if it's been ground back which is missing on the above.

My mate has registered bikes with race numbers on the cases. He said all DVLA were worried about is the frame number.

Hi men
the engine numbers are stamped in a raised portion of the upper cranckcase. The lenght of that raised portion was 65 mm original and had no raised lip around it. Sometime during production of the Z1A the lenght of the raised portion went up to 80 mm and then it had a raised lip. In the beginning the numbers were 6 mm high and later they were 5,2 mm high. A lot of other characteristics of the raised portion, letters and numbers changed throughout the years but that's something for anoraks or rivett counters...
The engine number on the picture of Swirl is not original but was stamped in by someone else.

As Garry says, should have a raised lip around the edge.
In the 70's you could buy a blank case set from Kawasaki UK.
S+S Performance did just that for their Silver Saxon production run, then stamped them up (badly) with their own unique number like my old bike here.

The original numbers stamp alters the composition , ie structure of the alloy molecules.
IIRC etching it would show them.
Gut feeling is ringer. Worse case scenario old bill will crush them

have you looked hard at the other Number stamped on the casing near the Oil filler cap could this be the real number stamped in for reference? or does it say OIL 370CC ?
I looked at a Bike in Holland that had been re stamped in Germany on Import to Germany
in the papers it said there was no papers so they had given it new numbers Frame and Engine
typically the other week I deleted the Pics I had but this does remind me of this
My thought is if you were doing it because it was A stolen engine, why would you not just alter a few digits or re stamp using the same letter number series not some thing that was totally different with no meaning to Kawasaki
As no one at DVLA seems to cares about engine numbers if you have a log book for the frame it will have the engine number that should be in the frame, So you have two options change it to this odd ball one with the DVLA or Change your Odd Ball one to the one on the log book
from my thought unless you put your self in a very bad light, why would any one apart from a buyer be checking an Engine number, in 35 odd years of riding a bike I can not remember once having this checked at a road side stop and way back when I looked like a 13 year old riding a z1000 and used to get stopped on the way to work and on the way home a few times a week not once did they do Number checks, I am pleased to say that no longer happens
