Hi guys,
What the best method to repair black paint flaking on my z1 engine, tried paint spray but it looks like crazy paving. It is just in a couple of places but I want to smarten it up.

Use Sperex/Simoniz tough black satin or Wurth satin and it should match with the original kwak paint and not react.
Don't bother with PJ1 as their new environmentally friendly formula is rubbish.
Prep is the key though and the crazing is probably down to either the wrong paint or contaminated surfaces.
Building up slowly with light dust coats on a warm engine will greatly reduce the chance of a reaction no matter what paint you use.

Yep! that'll do it.
It'll sweat the moisture out of the casting too.
Also standing the can in some warm water prior to spraying will help.

My way is to warm the can a little. Gets the spray out at higher temp and reduces runs etc.

To do it I get a plastic bag round the can and then part immerse in a jug of boiled water whilst still hot.

Don't leave it in too long or will get to hot to hold and be accurate. Cheaper & quicker than getting the engine running if it is a project.

Thanks for that, all good stuff. I have an heat gun so I can warm engine covers but warming the aerosol seems a good idea too. Perhaps a mix of the 2.

Tested on my kickstart cover, heated the cover up and sprayed, gives a total Matt black finish looks like soot being applied. Cover too hot?

Was this with Sperex / Simoniz or Wurth satin ?
May have been too hot but I bake mine till it smokes and it comes out like the factory satin/semi gloss finish.
Once cured it can be lightly polished with T-cut or Solvol to get a deeper satin gloss.
Also the more coats you apply the shinier it gets.
If you look at my Alloy Café thread the engine cases are shinier than the crank case but it's all the same paint that's just been treated differently.

Sounds like the piece was too hot and it fried the paint.
The trick is just to get it warm enough to take of the cold edge and sweat out any surface moisture.
With seperate parts i just get them warm to about the same as the can then spray.
I leave then to cure overnight and then they can be reheated to bake the paint and increase the solvent resistance if needed.
