Welding

#1 PostAuthor: scott » Mon Mar 18, 2019 10:49 am

Guys,
i need the shock mounting brackets on an XJR1300 swing arm moving by about an inch. So, they need removing and welding. Any ideas how much this kind of work would cost? What type of welding would be appropriate? I believe the swing arm and brackets are aluminium/alloy, not steel. Anybody know anyone in the Portsmouth/Southampton general area that is good?

They would need TIG welding.
But why do you need to move them ?
The arm is anodised so it will show where the mounts were removed and re-welded unless you plan to strip and polish the whole thing.
Might be better to have some billet blocks made that fit in the original mounts to move the mount forwards or raise the mount if it's for ride height adjustment.

Rob, the swing arm will eventually be powder coated satin black, so maybe the anodize issue will go away....i hope.
The only reason to remove and weld brackets is to move them closer to the chain. When i look at the shocks from the rear they seem quite spaced out and was wondering if they could just be moved in a bit......purely cosmetic Rob. It would also mean that the grab rail would fit nicely in its original position....no adapters required. Someone has quoted about £150-£200 to remove the brackets and weld them in a new position

Ah! OK. I see what you want to do.
I'm doing two zeds with xjr arms.
One of the arms is from an injection model which has only the chain side mount overhanging so i moved that inwards to match the other side.
The frame mounts still needed to be wider than originals though.
The other arm is probably like yours with both mounts wider than the arm but as i'm fitting a 6in rim i left that as is.
£150 ish is probably the going rate as they will have to jig the mounts to get them in the correct position, It's not as quick and simple as it sounds if you want it done right.
I don't have a TIG so I did all the prep on mine and jigged it up ready and it cost a tenner just for the welding.
Have you already got the arm in the frame ?
It's 11mm off each side of the pivot and either sleeve the tube or line bore the frame to 20mm if you haven't.

Swing arm is in the frame....all the mods on the neck have been done. Fits nicely now. Just the shock mounts to do.

I have just fitted an XJR swinger in this. Looks like it will work well.

Looks good Phil. You haven’t moved the shock mounts have you, by the looks of it. Now I can see how it’s going to look all black maybe I won’t move the bracket  any chance of a picture from behind, that’s when I think it looks a bit wide.

Scot Cannot get to the back, for a photo but I did move the shock mounts to line the shocks up.
The mounts currently sit 116 mm from the rear of the swing arm and 490mm bolt centre to swing arm spindle.
Shocks are 365mm long.
The swing arm clears but is close to the frame footrest mounts so you would not get nuts on the back of the brackets.

Hope this helps, might be able to do pics for you at the weekend.

I noticed that the swing arm is very close to the frame where the footrest bracket/lug is. Don’t the footrest brackets just bolt on with no nuts on the back?(gpz1100b1).

Yes mine do! Not sure about standard ones I have never checked, the frame lugs are threaded.
