Has anyone ever replaced the wiring harness on an ST? If so what did you use?

There isn't a repro available that I am aware of. Your only real option is to repair or make your own.

I used a MK2 repro harness from Frank Bach. He says it comes closest to the ST. Be prepared to make modifications though as the location of a number of electrical parts differs from the ST.

Thanks Mathh, I was thinking MKII myself. Can you give me more detail on the modifications needed?

the best person that knows about the MK2 and ST is Philippe
he is doing a post on the differences between the two bikes

I was talking to him about Using a ST loom before I found them new for my MK2 as i could find second hand ST looms and Not MK2

I think that just may be the standard looms are so alike but that its down to the rooting of things as you may know the battery box is very different and the electric panel but looking at the looms it looks like it mostly rooting to the same things just set up in different places

this is my guess until i can put a new MK2 loom next to my ST loom, that just buy taking off the tape and laying the wires to the components around the battery box fuse box ect i wont know for sure

am I right in thinking you don't have the old ST loom to work off ?

the ST will have a wires for a Fuel Gage and they both have Hazard lights looking at the wiring diagrams the MK2 mite have a turn signal alarm

there are differences between the two looms!
As Bruce mentioned, the electrical components are more or less the same but they are attached at different places.
If I have the time tomorrow, I'll take some pictures of the ST loom with the electrical components attached to it.
That might give you an idea about the place where the electrical components are situated on an ST and on a MK2.
I think that the best thing you can do is to buy a second hand ST loom and repair it. It will be less work compared to the modifications you'll have to do on a new MK2 loom in order to use it on an ST.

as promised, a few pictures.
It might seem a bit of a mess but I'll try to give you some explanation with the pictures.
We'll start with the right hand side of the bike, the first picture is the layout of the ST

You have the fuel gauge in the fuel tank.
We move backwards: under the battery box: the electronic ignition
on the right hand side of the battery box: the hazard warning relay and the regulator/rectifier on a triangular plate
at the back of the battery box: the starter solenoid and the fuse box
Now the left hand side of the bike:

you have the resistor for the ignition coils and the flasher relay
further to the back you have the small loom for the rear light and the indicators.

Now for the MK2
on the right hand side of the battery box you have the electronic ignition and the hazard relay

on the left hand side of the battery box on a big plate you have: the flasher relay, the fuse box and the regulator/rectifier
On the battery box, at the front, you have the starter solenoid.

The coils resistor is situated at the front of the chassis, under the fuel tank

There's no fuel gauge.
As you can see a lot of parts have a different place. I used an ST loom to take the pictures, I have no spare MK2 loom.
I would go for a repair of the old ST loom. Less work than adapting a MK2 loom!

I agree completely. That's not an original ST wiring loom, the previous owner constructed something himself that looks more like a birds nest...
Try to find a second hand ST wiring loom, they're out there somewhere. Restore it and you'll ride your bike without a problem.
