Z1 front wheel spindle

#1 PostAuthor: Adrian90s » Sun Mar 31, 2019 11:08 am

Hi guys
How do you remove the front wheel spindle?
The disc is off
Lots of heat applied and grip both ends and start unscrewing, or have I missed something?
Thanks

i, i just unscrew the axle whilst in forks,{ loosening off the clamp on bottom of fork first on one side } then drop wheel out, axle should then unscrew, and tap out axle from wheel ,should not have to apply heat

You have to move to move calipers out the way.
Undo speedo cable.
Undo clamps at bottom of forks.
Whole wheel drops out.
Then undo axle nuts, may need a good sized ratchet for leverage but should not need heat

Adrian
Removed wheel, big adjustable on each end and no movement, perhaps I need to put the wheel back between the wheel clamps with one side loose to get a better grip on it

As I have the forks off the bike, I cant clamp one side up and loosen the spindle. What about snipping the spokes and taking the hub into work and clamping other end in a vice then getting a big spanner on the other , not left hand thread by any chance?
The rim has the 20 odd yr old tyre still on and should be easy to clamp and remove at a garage.
Does this plan stack up?

We ARE talking Z1 here and not Z900 ?

Soft wrap and clamp the Zinc (SOLID) end of the axle in a vice, if you are going to use heat then use minimal on the speedo drive end, and it should jut come undone normally, if you struggle then get a REALLY good wide adjustable that grips it snugly, use a scaff pole and undo in the normal way.
Lifes too short . . .

Thanks

Should work. Last week I managed to undo a stubborn axle with two spanners, one taped to end then gently hit with a 2lb hammer. Helps if you have a spare pair of hands.

My method worked, snip the spokes out, take the hub to work and put the fixed end in a vice. Big adjustable on the speedo drive end. It gave eventually tho I did soak it over a few days with penetrating oil. Few scuffs on the flat bits what should I do? File the burs? Is it invisible with the clamps on? Chrome/zinc plate?

Any score marks on the flat will probably not visible, but will be a weak spot and could lead to corrosion.

It may be manageable, you could smear the damaged area with grease, (keep your fingers crossed), or get the axle re-plated.

Picture might help ?

The damage is more like a bur that's all, will clean up and leave I think. Not even worth a picture.
Thanks
