Problem- Battery shows 9 volts with engine off. Jumps to 12 volts when on tickover but goes DOWN when revs are increased.Neutral light /rear light flicker on tick over, Indicators flash too quickly and battery does not charge. I duspect rectifier but maybe regulator or something else? Any ideas would be appreciated,
Regards, John

You need to check thee battery and all components of the charge circuit.

Sounds like you might have a battery cell dropping out intermittently. I had this happen on a gel battery once.

+1 to Scott's theory, but also worth checking the earth side from the battery too.. good luck. m

Can you ride it, if you've got a cell down it will sap the juice from the alt and it will bog down or cut out in my experience, what's the battery like off the bike?

Mine did both, bogged down or cut out.

Thanks all for your help. Today replaced old regulator and rectifier with Z power combined unit.-No change, so did more poking around and removed the flasher and hazard relays-.Now the bike charges and everything ok,except flashers obviously. Borrowed the same two relays from my other Z and everything works ok.I am not bad with electrics but cannot understand how a duff flasher or hazard relay can affect the charge circuit=no wonder people hate electrical problems!!!=just got to find a replacement hazard relay which no one seems to list.Flasher one is no problem.Regards John

Hi all , that was not the end of the story after all! Even with the flasher relay replaced, today still only had 9.6 v at battery.Even with engine running this would only increase marginally but flashers and headlamp were ok.So I fitted a new battery as suggested in your replies and allseems good now. 12.4 volts with engine off.Once the engine starts,12.6 volts, rising up to 13volts after o couple of minutes running and staying there even with main beam on,with engine on fast idle. So with the reg /rectifier replaced and a new battery, any further problems will point to alternator or bad wiring maybe at the four plugs on the sub loom-taking it out for a test ride tomorrow so we shall see!
