Some later bikes run oil colours, early ones not so much, are the benefits felt with a 1045 motor or is it only needed on big block monsters thanks Swirl

big K offered oil coolers as options from very early on but mostly with racing in mind i think,but they were pricey for the average owner on hp still living at mum n dads! i reckon any extra cooling is a bonus on an air/oil cooled motor, if it was was ok for ferdinand porsche, it's ok with me.. lockhart sold tons of quality coolers in the hot u.s.a. market for Z's an gnarly davidsons much cheaper than the snipers could supply them .. m

If you're gonna use the bike hard then I'd definitely recommend one.
Back in the day I fried my oil and seized the scraper rings on the two middle pistons, and this was just hard road use on a standard 1000J with no cooler.
That said, oil quality has improved so much over the last few years so hopefully that wouldn't happen again

my 1105 Z1 needs an oil cooler - my 1075 Z1R has one but wasn't a problem without.
My 1015 standard Z1000 doesn't.

you can make up a kit of new parts for < £150

I'm genuinely curious (not just being argumentative) but how have you decided that one definitely needs an oil cooler and one doesn't ?

I had a std Z900 in great mechanical nick, one summer in heavy traffic at Poole Quay bike do - it was a hot afternoon & she cooked the oil - engine hissing like a steam engine.... ran fine again once cooled off for an hour or so

My std Z900A4 has one - easy enuff to blank the cooler off in cooler weather - great peace of mind.

I always use a thermostat with an oil cooler. Oil that is too cold is as bad for an engine as oil that is too hot.

Can you buy a thermostat that goes inline say on the the banjo which only opens when the engine is up to temperature,

you can get in-line thermostats swirl thats what lockhart use, try ebay 'mocal in line thermostat' good prices for related unions etc n free postage last time I looked. m

By-passe's can be / are good ........until the stat sticks or fails ( as they can do... either open or closed ! ) .........then it depends on how it's internal plumbing is designed - as to whether your top end gets 'enough' or any oil at all !!!!!!!!!!!
Thats why I choose to use use a mechanical means to restrict cooling air over my Cooler during winter months = a simple black Rubber blanking plate.... supported by 3 heavy gauge rubber bands... it's not very high tech but it works a treat & is not really visible when in place ! ( & it lives in my tail piece under the seat when not in use )
