Good sets of carbs come on the for sale board quite often, shouldn’t be to difficult to get a good set.

You can not buy new Mikuni VM28 carbs for the Z1000.

You could fit Mikuni RS34 Flat slides, or Keihin 29 CRS - Which you can but new. Or if you're really flush Mikuni TM34's.

Or you could get your carbs refurbished - Ben Day @ VapourWorx specialise in old carbs. He sells a few which have been fully refurbed (£900 ish).

You don't say what sort of problems you are having and what sort of set up you have, i.e exhaust, air box, jetting, is everything else as it should be like clearances, timing, points.

They are second hand Bill and that said you still don't know what problems may be encountered, i have a set of B1/2 carbs been cleaned throughout and levels set, no one wanted them they are just an ornament at present.

Ian,

Why don't you let us know what the issues are and what you've done to your carbs so far. Duff running isn't always the carbs, even when you think it is, so you have to rule out lots of other stuff also.

Unless there is physical damage , float posts broken off, stripped air screw threads etc I've never had a set of carbs that are actually worn out.
The only non replaceable wearing area of the actual body is the slide bore and I've never had a carb become unusable because of that.

Hi all, the problems are it popping and farting all the time and a range of tickovers from cutout to 3000rpm depending on how hard you slam the throttle shut, I fitted a full Dyna ignition system which achieved nothing, carbs are balanced and have new seal kits in, all the compression readings are good and it has the standard Jardine exhausts and airbox....it did have a raggy throttle cable which I thought might be the issue with the tickover but two new cables and it's the same.....really getting on my nerves now and the price tag of a grand for shiny new 34mm flat slides is very tempting, I want to enjoy the bike not hate taking it out knowing it's not 100% or at least as close as possible to that

Ian,
when you say your carbs have new seals, do you mean gaskets? What main and pilot jets does it have? Have you properly set up the sir screws as per the manual or colortune?
Are you sure you don't have an air leak on the air box side? Have you checked that the air filter actually fits and seals properly? (as a lot of the repro filters don't seal properly due to bad design and incorrect dimensions). Does the air box lid close and seal properly? Many don't as the tabs weaken or snap off and the foam seal degrades.
All of the above can and will affect low speed running and tickover, particularly any air leaks on the airbox side.
Also, if you've fitted the Dyna ignition you really should fit their coils too - it's a massive improvement in how the bike will run.

full Dyna kit fitted with coils and leads, the carb kits are gaskets and Orings, it has new airbox rubbers on with clips but the airbox itself is open at the back as in I can see the filter, I thought there might be something missing but not sure what, the lid is fine and to be honest I reckon the air screws/mixture could need done, problem is it keep running like a bag sh*te and I can't get a good colour on the plugs.....and I'm not sure what the jet sizes are

Sounds like the rear of the air box is missing, and if it is running on stateside jets it possibly has 102.5 mains and 15 pilots which will be a tad weak with your set up, my stateside b is on 107.5 mains and 20 pilot with after market exhaust and it runs really well, my old A2 used to run rough without the rear air box exhibiting the same symptoms as yours, if you can get the rear part of air box it will probably help.

yeah I've just been looking at the airbox setup, the silencer is missing, the carbs I bought secondhand and are European ones but I cannot remember the jet sizes, should have written them down somewhere
