Camshafts
Hi, anybody ever had a bent/twisted camshaft? How do you check such a thing?
Re: Camshafts
Fairly rare for one to be bent in normal use unless it's been chucked in a box with other parts, dropped or severely abused when being bolted down which would most likely damage other parts too.
Best way to check for bend is set it between centers or in a lathe and clock the journals with a dial gauge.
Twist will need the lobe phasing checking with a degree disc but symptoms of a twisted cam are more likely due to badly worn lobes or an inaccurate grind.

Re: Camshafts
I can see bend just holding cam up to the light!
Re: Camshafts
If it's that bent and it's not an optical illusion or the cam won't turn by hand in the head then there's no need for the checks I suggested in my first reply and the cam will need replacing.
Re: Camshafts
If you have got the valves out of the head, you could just lay it in the head and see if it turns then bolt the caps on and then see if it still turns.Probably an optical illusion.
Re: Camshafts
Just curious, but it would take a big impact to bend a camshaft.
Presume it hasn't happened (if it has) when on the bike or else there'd be severe damage elsewhere?
