Z1 900 cylinder sleeve diameter

#1 PostAuthor: Chris71 » Thu Oct 10, 2019 9:36 am

Hello can anyone please help, I have a 1975 Z1-B with the original engine but the previous owner used a 1075cc wisco kit with a Z1000 (1015cc) barrel.
The bike has only done a few hundred miles on this rebuild.
I want to change the barrel back to the original 903cc casting (which I have). Will the sleeves out of the 1015cc casting fit the 903cc casting without machining?
As my 903cc barrel has had the sleeves removed already, I figured I would just swap the sleeves..
Any ideas.

The 900 sleeves are a smaller diameter than the 1000 so the 1000 sleeves don't fit unless you get the 900 block bored out.

Or the sleeves turned down?

If they were stock 70mm you would just get away with it and have around 2mm wall thickness just like boring the 900 sleeves to 1015 but at 1075 there would be nothing left.

Great that makes sense, next question can you fit the 1075cc wiseco sleeves in the 903cc casting? The casting must be getting pretty thin? I see wiseco list the same sleeve for both

The 900 block can easily be bored to take the 1000 liner.
The 1000 and 900 blocks are basically the same casting and more or less identical apart from the capacity logo etc..
There's enough meat on them to take a 1200 liner.
1260 liners have been fitted in the past but at that size the machining breaks through the casting in places exposing the outer wall of the sleeve.

I'm guessing the bike has got KA627SL sleeves which are drop in for a 1015cc cylinder.
Does anyone know the standard O.D. of them (standard 1015cc sleeves)?
The 903cc barrel I have came without liners and I'm not sure if the casting has been bore out already.
