Hi,

Is this the right tough black paint that is recommended by some on these forums for engine painting.
On ebay there are 2 different looking tins

Yes it is. You can use it straight onto bare metal but only becomes fuel resistant after a couple of heat cycles.

edited to add ensure you clean the nozzle properly and quickly after use. I have several 3/4 full tins which I cant get anything out of even with a new nozzle. It dries to touch dry and nozzle clogging very very quickly!

The one to use is coded SIMVHT51D with the yellow labelling ( first pic ).
Note the VHT in the coding.
They changed the can design a while ago so it's easy to get the wrong one.
It used to be in the blue tin as in the second pic and was labeled as either Simoniz or Sperex.
It was originally "Sperex competition black" with a chequered flag design and Simoniz must have took over the business
There are still a few tins on Ebay with the old design.
Don't know if its old stock or they are using both lables for different areas or countries.
Either way just look at the code to get the right one.

My tin does not have the yellow label but it is coded SIMVHT51D so I assume this is OK

So that's three different cans with the same code on ?
Who knows what they are playing at ?
Has to be a reason for the difference between the two new versions but I've been using the yellow for a few years and it's the correct stuff.
Might go try the other and see if it's the same ..

I’ve got to spray my engine

2 engines I have done with it , tip from Big Fluff - use the hair dryer on it between light coats

I recommend that stuff. I used it on all sorts of parts. a good match to factory for switchgear housings and the lever clamps.

After discussing the various tin options for the tough black I used the one I had already bought shown right at the top of this post.
I'm very pleased with the initial results.
As Warren3200GT said, it's very gungy and clogs the nozzle easy. I took off the nozzle and gave it a quick blast with an air line after each time I used it.
I also tried the Simoniz Engine Enamel for the side casings.
I realise it's not quite the same as the original black chrome look which some say you can get by polishing the tough black but the bikes not original and I'm very pleased how it looks.
Just gotta find out how well it all lasts now.

Looks great , give some heat and curing time and it will do well , the tough black is easy to touch up , sometimes I spray some into the cap and use a small art brush
